Two individuals have been confirmed to have Mpox in Tanzania.

A disease sign of Mpox

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that two individuals have tested 'positive' for Mpox in the country, following laboratory investigations prompted by reports of patients exhibiting symptoms such as rashes on the face, hands, feet, and other body parts.

In a statement released on March 10, 2025, by Health Minister Jenista Mhagama , it was noted that these symptoms were accompanied by fever, headaches, sore throat, and body aches, including muscle and back pain.

One of the confirmed cases involves a truck driver who traveled from a neighboring country to Dar es Salaam.

After receiving reports of the suspected cases, samples were collected and sent to the National Laboratory for testing. On March 9, 2025, laboratory results confirmed that both individuals were infected with the virus responsible for Mpox.

The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the " President's Office"  and all health service facilities, is actively monitoring, investigating, and identifying any additional cases to ensure they receive appropriate care.

The disease is primarily transmitted from animals, particularly monkeys, to humans through activities that may involve contact with infected animals, their fluids, or meat. If a human contracts the virus, they can potentially transmit it to others through direct contact.

In light of this information, the Ministry of Health assures the public that the government is prepared to control this outbreak, leveraging its experience in managing infectious diseases.

Efforts are ongoing to enhance disease surveillance at all levels, screen individuals entering and exiting the country, and improve health education to empower communities to take preventive measures.
