The Rural Energy Agency (REA), in collaboration with "Oryx Gas Tanzania Ltd," launched a distribution initiative for 6-kilogram gas cylinders to residents of Buhigwe district in Kigoma region.
A total of 3,255 gas cylinders will be distributed in the area at a subsidized price of 20,000 shillings. The initiative was inaugurated by Buhigwe District Commissioner, Colonel Michael Ngayalina, at the Kamazi neighborhood, who praised the Sixth Phase Government for its efforts through REA and Oryx Gas in providing this clean energy solution, urging citizens to take advantage of this opportunity.
He commended REA for implementing the project and recognized Oryx Gas for their partnership in delivering ' clean energy' to rural communities.
The gas cylinder distribution project officially commenced on March 3, 2025, in Kasulu district, where over 2,000 cylinders had already been sold to residents by the previous days.
Ramadhan Mganga, the REA Project Manager for Clean Energy in Kigoma, said that the government has allocated 390 million shillings for the project, aiming to distribute a total of 19,530 gas cylinders at the subsidized price across rural and peri-urban areas of Kigoma.
He highlighted that this initiative was officially launched by President Samia Suluhu Hassan on February 27, 2025, in Tanga, with the goal of encouraging citizens to adopt clean energy, targeting at least 80% of Tanzanians to use clean energy by 2034.
The overarching aim to empower rural residents with access to clean cooking energy, thereby reducing the negative impacts associated with the use of non-clean energy sources.
