The Tanzanian government, through the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS), has announced plans to expand the roads leading in and out of Dodoma city, covering a total length of 220 kilometers. The expansion will involve constructing four- and six-lane roads aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and enhancing transportation services in the city.
This information was shared in Dodoma by the Director of Planning and Infrastructure at TANROADS, Engineer Ephatar Mlavi, during a press briefing discussing the achievements of the Sixth Phase Government under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, held on February 17, 2025, at the MAELEZO Department.
Engineer Mlavi identified the roads involved in this project as the Dodoma - Morogoro road (70 km), Dodoma - Arusha road (50 km), Dodoma - Singida road (50 km), and Dodoma - Iringa road (50 km).
“The goal is to ensure these roads connect seamlessly with the Dodoma Outer Ring Roads, transforming Dodoma into a model city free from traffic congestion, thereby attracting economic growth activities,” Engineer Mlavi said .
He further explained that the expansion will be funded by the government in collaboration with the World Bank, starting with the roads leading into and out of Dodoma towards Chamwino (32 km), the Dodoma to Iringa-Mkonze road (4.5 km), and the Dodoma to Arusha-Zamahero road (8.5 km).
Additionally, Mlavi noted that by February 2025, the construction of the first phase of the ring road (112.3 km) from Nala to Veyula to Mtumba to Ihumwa Dry Port (52.3 km) has reached 91% completion, while the second phase from Ihumwa to Dry Port to Matumbulu to Nala (62 km) is at 85% completion.
Mlavi also mentioned that the government continues to implement various projects aimed at reducing congestion in other cities and towns, including regions like Dar es Salaam, Mbeya, Arusha, and Mwanza.
