The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, today, Wednesday, February 26, 2025, handed over 35 modern boats to fishermen in the Tanga region as part of the second phase of the national boat financing project for fishermen.
This initiative, overseen by the government through the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, aims to support fishermen in coastal areas, Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika, and Lake Nyasa, enhancing productivity in the fishing sector and promoting sustainable fishing practices.
The first phase of the project commenced in the 2022/2023 fiscal year with a budget of 11.5 billion shillings, providing 160 boats to 3,163 beneficiaries.
During the handover ceremony, the Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, Dr. Ashatu Kijaji, stated that these boats will not only boost fish production but also help combat illegal fishing.
He noted that 113 youths from Tanga, previously involved in illegal fishing, have chosen to transform their lives by joining legitimate fishing groups through this affordable loan program.
In the 2024/2025 budget, the government has allocated 120 boats for fishermen, with 70 designated for the coastal region (Tanga, Dar es Salaam, Pwani, Lindi, and Mtwara), 29 for Lake Victoria, and 21 for Lakes Tanganyika and Nyasa.
The 35 boats delivered today are valued at over 4.477 billion shillings, with one boat specifically given to a youth group in Tanga, who have committed to safeguarding the nation’s fishing resources.
This initiative continues the efforts of the Sixth Phase Government to elevate the fishing sector and ensure that fishermen have access to quality tools for their development and that of the nation as a whole.
This ongoing effort aims to stimulate opportunities for many unemployed youths in the country, providing them with a valuable chance within President Samia's commendable strategy.
