Uganda's army chief, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of President Yoweri Museveni, announced his exit from X, previously known as Twitter, on January 10.
His departure follows a series of inflammatory posts, including threats against opposition leader Bobi Wine and aggressive comments about neighboring countries.
Kainerugaba, often viewed as a potential successor to his father, had amassed over a million followers with his controversial remarks.
In a recent post, he claimed that only his father's presence was stopping him from harming Wine, stating he would act if not for Museveni's influence. On Friday, he described his time on the platform as a "great whirlwind and rousing journey," emphasizing his need to concentrate on his role as head of the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces, a decision that may help reduce diplomatic tensions.
His provocative tweets have previously led to apologies from President Museveni, including a 2022 comment about swiftly capturing Nairobi. Kainerugaba has also expressed support for Russia's actions in Ukraine and the Tigrayan rebels in Ethiopia.
Last month, he escalated diplomatic strains by threatening to take Khartoum following Donald Trump's inauguration, prompting Uganda to clarify that his views were not the government's official position.
While some of his posts have been lighthearted, such as naming the world's most handsome men, he has a history of controversial statements. Kainerugaba had previously disabled his account in April 2022 but reactivated it just two days later. President Museveni, in power since 1986, is preparing for re-election next year, amid allegations from international observers and human rights organizations regarding vote manipulation and severe suppression of opposition figures, including Wine, during the 2021 election.
