The Venezuelan government has offered a reward of $100,000, equivalent to 243,643,000 Tanzanian shillings, for information leading to the arrest of opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia.
González Urrutia claims to have won the presidential election against Nicolás Maduro in July 2023 but fled the country in September 2024 after an arrest warrant was issued against him.
Following the government's announcement, he stated his intention to embark on an international tour, starting with a visit to Argentina to meet President Javier Milei, where he reiterated his plan to return to Venezuela and assume the presidency on January 10, challenging Maduro, who is also expected to be sworn in that day with military backing.
Despite Maduro's declaration of victory in the 2023 elections, widespread protests from the opposition highlighted allegations of electoral fraud.
As the electoral authorities failed to provide transparent vote counts, prompting Maduro to seek a review from the high court, which ultimately upheld his victory.
