President Biden announced one-time payment of $770 for victims of the wildfires in Los Angeles

US President Joe Biden has unveiled a plan to provide $770 in one-time payments to those affected by the California wildfires, aiming to deliver immediate federal assistance as the fires continue to rage.

During a briefing at the White House, Biden emphasized the urgency of support, stating that victims can use the funds to purchase essential items like water, baby formula, and medications. Nearly 6,000 survivors have already signed up for this aid, with $5.1 million disbursed so far.

FEMA has activated its Critical Needs Assistance Program, enabling these initial payments to reach survivors promptly.

Biden also reported varying levels of containment for the wildfires, with 14 percent in Pacific Palisades, 33 percent in Pasadena, and full containment in Ventura.

He previously announced that the federal government would cover all costs related to California's firefighting efforts for 180 days, extending into the next administration.

In discussions with Vice President Kamala Harris and emergency officials, Biden highlighted the significant financial burden of recovery, estimating costs could reach tens of billions, and called on Congress for necessary funding. The economic impact of the fires is projected to be between $250 billion and $275 billion, surpassing previous disaster costs, including those from the 2020 wildfire season and Hurricane Helene in 2024.
